Dúo Stump-Linshalm

“Two clarinet players are an admittedly very small line-up, but this duo’s courage and propensity for the eccentric which have inspired numerous composers to compose for them. Among them are big names such as Pierluigi Billone, Beat Furrer and Chaya Czernowin. Petra Stump-Linshalm and Heinz-Peter Linshalm are virtuosic performers who succeed at drawing the maximum out of their instruments. They elicit the most unlikely sounds from different members of the clarinet family and carefully investigate the acoustic potential they hold. Their precise and brilliant playing builds on soft vibrations and minimal shocks, microtonal oscillations and tones. The duo’s repertoire comes from both contemporary and classical music which is performed with a tremendous sensibility and in keen technical adeptness.“

In 2003, the composer Bernhard Gander set the cornerstone for the two musicians’ future collaboration as a duo with Mr. Vertigo for two basset horns and tape recorder. The combination of two instruments of the clarinet family, in particular two bass clarinets, has sparked the interest of other contemporary composers such as Pierluigi Billone, Chaya Czernowin or Beat Furrer and inspired them to collaborate with the Duo.

In 2004, the Duo Stump-Linshalm released born to be off-road on ein_klang records. This double CD might be seen as a kind of interim stocktaking of their work with contemporary composers thus far and it was awarded the prestigious Pasticcio prize by Austria’s Radio Ö1. Petra Stump and Heinz-Peter Linshalm share an enthusiasm for music that is apparent in their classical and contemporary music programs for adults, but they also especially enjoy performing and working with children.

One clear example of their dedication to contemporary clarinet literature is the CLARINET UPDATE, written and published by the duo in 2005 as a pedagogically designed collection of simple contemporary clarinet literature intended to acquaint future clarinetists with modern playing techniques and to open their ears to contemporary music. The two artists also facilitate access to contemporary music through their clarinet workshops. In the fall of 2006, the duo caused a stir with a unique project: 1+1=1 for two bass clarinets, written and dedicated to the duo by the Italian composer Pierluigi Billone. They performed the world premiere of this more than 70-minute-long composition at the wien modern festival and also released a CD of the studio recording of the piece on the KAIROS label .

In 2010 the duo released its third double CD on ein_klang records – ShortCuts: a unique collection of works for two clarinets or bass clarinets.  This diverse array of 34 short pieces written by composers from four continents is a snapshot of the contemporary scene.
In  2012 a CD with Chamber Music for Wind Instruments for basset horns and bassoon by W. A. Mozart (Gramola) followed as well as the premier recording of the Vienna Reed Quintet (Naxos). Extrem in every way is the piece Linien II by Alexander Stankovski (god records 2018) because it uses all the clarinets from e-flat down  to contrabass clarinet. The CD Fantasy Studies (orlando records 2018) is a further collaboration which presents compositions by Petra Stump-Linshalm.
